Tidelands Health Georgetown Memorial Hospital New Mall
Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
The New Mall Addition is the second phase of a larger masterplan for the Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital. After several work sessions with staff and administrators, Curtis Group identified several significant issues with the current orientation of services within the hospital.
The ambulance entrance was originally located along the most public side of the building and the original public entrance for the Emergency and Imaging Departments was located on the rear of the building next to the loading dock and plant services. This layout was confusing for patients and visitors, and inefficient for staff. Additionally, the Emergency Department had reached capacity and needed a total renovation. Curtis Group designed a masterplan to flip the functions of the hospital by creating a clear delineation between staff and public spaces.
The new 7,200 SF public mall addition included a modern, two-story waiting area with new entrance canopies. The public mall entrance opens to a long hall of windows, letting natural light fall onto the new welcome desk and registration cubicles. Past these spaces, the mall flows back into the newly renovated Emergency and Imaging Departments.
The Emergency Department has been reconfigured with a new, open waiting area that is connected to two triage rooms and adjacent to a central security station. A new pod with five exam rooms was created next to the triage rooms to take advantage of a fast track method that will improve patient wait times.
As part of the 10,000-square-foot renovation, the trauma bays and ambulance entrance were moved to the rear of the department where the old public entrance was converted into a staff circulation corridor. This project required Curtis Group to work diligently with the contractor and owner to create a series of phasing plans so that construction work would cause minimal disruptions to normal Emergency Department operations.
Upgrades were not limited to the building alone. The front parking lot was resurfaced and enlarged to accommodate the current demand and make the public entrance more accessible for outpatients and visitors. Coinciding with the new mall addition, the facility’s existing infrastructure was upgraded and its equipment modernized.
This project solidifies Tidelands Health’s commitment to the city of Georgetown, providing a fresh facility that the community can have great pride in for many years.
